Coffin Bay SA 5607
(Pop 480)
Coffin Bay is a picturesque isolated holiday destination on Eyre Peninsula’s southern tip situated 710 km west of Adelaide. The original small settlement was called Oyster Town (1840s) due to the vast supplies in the area which were quickly exhausted. Explorer Matthew Flinders’ name, for his friend, Isaac Coffin, was then adopted. Today fishing, cultivated oysters and tourism sustain the town’s economy. Coffin Bay NP (south & west Coffin Bay) 31 000 ha diverse coastal park of massive sand dunes and pounding surf beaches (south) to peaceful tranquil bays (north & pictured) and excellent for bushwalking & birdwatching. Kellidie Bay Conservation Park (east Coffin Bay) popular canoeing & walking limestone area. Yangie Bay Trail a 10 km trail with breathtaking coastal views to Point Avoid. Coffin Bay has a hotel/motel, holiday cabins/cottages & caravan park.
